Syrian gov’t troops take key town east of capital

08-14-2014 19:18 BJT

Syrian government troops have recaptured a key contested suburb east of the capital Damascus.

According to a TV station run by the pro-Damascus Lebanese group Hezbollah, the Syrian army took full control of the strategic Mlaiha town on Thursday. The area is a mix of farmland and small towns, and has been controlled by rebels for more than a year.

The victory is expected to deter the daily mortar attacks coming from the town. The army has also made successive victories in the northern suburb of the capital.
