Some of those who there as the doors opened said that as well as looking for new books they wanted to attend reader’s meetings and see famous authors in person.

This year's fair features more than 600 activities involving both Chinese and international writers that include everything from book signings to seminars. There are more than three times as many events as there were at the first few fairs.

After ten years, the annual book fair is becoming more than just a marketplace for books. Organizers also want to attract more readers through different events and services.

To bring literature closer to local readers, many events are taking place at local libraries and famous attractions. One publisher says the events will benefit her business in the long run.

“Holding events may not bring very fast and direct growth in your book sales. But from a long-term view, it is still worth promoting them as readers can learn more about our books and writers, and will be attracted by them,” said Cai Xin, Beijing Division, Shanghai Century Publishing Co.

Another publisher says the events offer a good opportunity to get closer to readers, and help to improve their future publications.

"One set of books on world history was improved based on feedback we got from readers at previous book fairs. We added more historical stories and pictures to make the books more vivid," said Ding Feng, Oriental Publishing Center.

Organizers say as well as the events, they are also trying to make things more convenient for visitors. Readers who cannot carry all the books they want can use a courier service, and volunteers are on duty at the Exhibition Center from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. all week.
