US welcomes Maliki’s decision to step down

08-15-2014 10:44 BJT

The White House on Thursday praised Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, for dropping his bid for a third term and throwing his support to Haider al-Abadi.

US national security adviser Susan Rice said in a statement that Maliki’s decision is a major step forward in uniting his country. Rice said the US government had heard from a number of leaders in Iraq who have pledged their support to Abadi. She noted expressions of support from some other countries as well.

Meanwhile, US warplanes have carried out targeted air raids on ISIL militants since last Friday in an effort to stem their advance on Irbil. The Obama administration has indicated its readiness to offer military support to Iraq once Abadi becomes prime minister.
