Earlier this week saw the launch of the 2014 China International Youth Arts Festival, here in the capital. Now in its 7th year, it's China's only arts event to exclusively showcase the finest young artistic talents from across China and around the world. This year's edition opened with a concert featuring a selection of classical Chinese music.

China International Youth Arts Festival features stage performances, art exhibitions and academic forums. First launched in 2008, the festival has seen thousands of young participants from over 30 countries and regions. The annual event is a unique platform for young artists to demonstrate their energy, creativity and responsibilities.

The opening concert presented by the Chinese Orchestra of the China National Opera and Dance Drama Theater features a very diverse repertoire. From Mongolian folk tunes to theme music from classic Hong Kong TV series of the 1980's, the troupe selects some of the finest moments and remakes them into contemporary pieces.

"First of all we got to entertain people. When I curated this show, I take it as an educational programme as well. But traditional cultures can be intimidating sometimes, especially when it comes to young people. So we have to make them like us first, then it'll be easier for them to take in what we present on stage." said Zhang Zheng, Conductor.

A Chinese music troupe in the form of an orchestra is not the only east-meets-west moment of the event. The organizers aim to put together a fresh and exciting programme of festival events, workshops and exhibitions, hoping to create fond memories for all participants.

"It's a platform for young artistic talents, but the audience members are not limited. I think it'll become a win-win situation if people of all ages come to see this arts festival. They will have a chance to see and maybe experience the minds of the youth, and the artists will be able to hear responses from different groups of people." said Zhang Zheng, Conductor.

In all, the Youth Arts Festival is not only an experience to enrich the young participants' artistic craft, but also an opportunity to celebrate their fellow peers. Encompassing concert recitals, a visual art exhibit, a film festival and theatrical performances, the event will last until the end of August.
