APEC aims to reduce food waste by 10% in Asia-pacific region by 2020

The APEC Food Safety Cooperation Forum kicked off in Beijing Friday and passed plans to combat food waste.

The APEC food security road map aims to realise food safety for all APEC members by 2020. It also plans to reduce food waste by 10 percent in Asia pacific region from its current level. The 21 nations of APEC will focus on increasing food production, scientific storage, and anti food waste campaigns.

They will also share new technologies on reducing loss after harvest. Expert said the campaign is expected to bring food price lower for low income groups. Alleviating land and water resource shortage is among China’s top priorities.

"At the moment our main target is to ease pressure on shortage of resources, such as water and land. We will increase food supplies, and bring down cost of food for lower income earners. Every economy has good methods in reducing food waste, but they are relatively independent. The roadmap that we passed this time, can serve as a reference for each country, and share new experiences and new technologies," said Zeng Liying, deputy director of State Administration of Grain.
