Russia denies its vehicles crossed border into Ukraine

Ukraine says its artillery has destroyed part of a Russian armoured column that entered Ukraine territory under the cover of darkness. But this has been denied by Russia. A spokesman for the Ukrainian military, Andriy Lysenko, told a news briefing that the Russian military vehicles were detected on Thursday night.

"I promise to you that we detected the column and kept a watch on it. Appropriate actions were taken and a part of it no longer exists," said Andriy Lysenko, Ukrainian military spokesman.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko also briefed British Prime Minister David Cameron on the incident, and told him a "significant" part of the Russian column had been destroyed. But Poroshenko didn’t give any proof. Meanwhile, Ukraine said its forces which are fighting armed anti-government activists came under artillery attack from Russian territory on Friday.

In Moscow, a spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry insisted that no Russian military vehicles were destroyed because none had crossed into Ukraine. And the Russian government called the Ukrainian report "some kind of fantasy".
