Palestine, Israel poised to resume Cairo talks

08-17-2014 13:08 BJT

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has said he supports talks between Israeli and Palestinian delegations in Cairo. Abbas made the comments as he met with members of the Palestinian delegation, ahead of their trip to Egypt.

"We support the continuation of the talks, according to the Egyptian proposal. Egypt does not stand between Palestine and Israel, it’s leading the process," Mahmoud Abbas said.

Meanwhile, the top representative of Hamas says that the negotiations are not meeting all their expectations. The leader wrote on his Facebook page that - quote: "Israel must accept the demands of the Palestinian people or face a long war."

The two sides are expected back in Cairo for fresh talks on Sunday, which aims to reach a more permanent ceasefire before a truce expires at midnight on Monday.
