On Saturday, the week-long Shanghai Book Fair saw many book-lovers coming through the doors, eager to sample a diverse range of fresh titles and special literary events.

More than 150,000 books are on show at the fair, and more than 500 publishers have their books on display inside the Shanghai Exhibition Center. The event is taking place in conjunction with Shanghai Reading Week.

Almost 1,000 international writers, scholars, and celebrities have been invited to a several special events.  And legendary Chinese basketball star Yao Ming is one of them.

"I'm really keen to take a look. I prefer biographies, because I like to read about real people," Yao said.

Famous writers are also attending, giving speeches and meeting the readers. The event is aimed at raising awareness of literature and the value of reading.

Activities are being held across Shanghai to encourage people to take more interest in reading.
