Part of Russian convoy makes its way to Ukrainian border

08-17-2014 19:25 BJT

Reuters reports that 16 trucks that are part of the convoy have left the parking lot in western Russia where they have been waiting for days, and are now headed for the Ukrainian border.

The Ukrainian government said earlier this week it had designated the Russian convoy as humanitarian aid, in principle clearing it to cross the border under the auspices of the Red Cross. The Russia column comprises about 280 trucks in total.

The Red Cross says the main hold-up has been a lack of security guarantees from all sides in the conflict.
