Flash floods and mudslides kill 84 in Nepal

08-17-2014 19:39 BJT

Nepalese officials say that at least 84 people have been killed, after torrential rain triggered landslides and flooding in the last few days.

Over 150 more people are missing. Ten districts in the country’s western region suffered the brunt of the damage. A spokesperson of the Nepalese Home Ministry said the incessant rain also left some 1,500 stranded and waiting for rescuers.

The Home Ministry adds it has been difficult for the government to dispatch help to the disaster zone, due to major roads being blocked by debris or flooded. The government on Sunday accepted responsibility for failing to respond quickly enough to the disaster.
