A hostel in the western German city of Bonn is offering people the chance to revisit their childhoods and spend a weekend in retro mobile holiday homes.

BaseCamp, a former warehouse, has been converted into a vintage indoor campsite with an array of vintage caravans, campervans and railway carriages.

Basecamp Hostel Bonn has 16 vintage caravans, two VW campervans, two old sleeping carriages, and four US Airstream caravans, imported from Florida.

The whole site can accommodate up to 120 people.

"I think the main thing is that this is unique. And don't take it too seriously. It's not a real campsite, it's not a hotel or hostel, it's something in between. It's a bit kitschy, it's a bit over the top. And people like it," said Thomas Lenz, Project Manager of Basecamp Hostel Bonn.

All the interior fittings were done by a TV and film set designer. Each space has a different theme, with names such as"Jägerhütte", "Big Ben", "Pitstop" and "Flower Power".

“For the first time it was a really interesting place. Something new, something different. It's some camp, some campus under the roof. It was very interesting. It was the first time to see this in Europe. And the price was really good,” a visitor named Nejc Rednak said.

BaseCamp opened nearly a year ago and business has been brisk.

"People are coming from all over the world, people of every age. We originally thought we'd get mostly young people, like students and backpackers. But we've found that grandparents are coming here, because they enjoy the camping experience, but they don't want to stay outside," Lenz said.

In case visitors want to experience the great outdoors, the hostel has a couple of caravans just outside, under the elements.
