US-S. Korea drills begin to test defense against DPRK threats

08-18-2014 14:06 BJT

The South Korean Defense Ministry says South Korea and the United States have begun their annual joint war exercise to test and improve their joint defense against the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

The Ulchi Freedom Guardian military drill is expected to run for two weeks. Some 50,000 South Korean and 30,000 US servicemen are taking part in the computer-aided drill. South Korean authorities say a four-day escape exercise will be held around the country, starting Monday. It aims to simulate a scenario in which South Korea is under long-range missile attack by the DPRK.

Earlier on Sunday, Pyongyang warned Seoul that it will launch pre-emptive attacks at any time in response to the joint military exercise.
