US police: Unrest in Ferguson was planned and premeditated

08-18-2014 17:52 BJT

US Police in the city of Ferguson, Missouri, fired tear gas to disperse people protesting against the shooting of teenager Michael Brown, who was fatally shot by a police officer. According to the police, the unrest overnight was planned and premeditated.

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon ordered the National Guard to help restore peace to the St Louis suburb. The latest confrontation unfolded hours after Attorney General Eric Holder ordered a federal medical examiner to perform another autopsy on Michael Brown.

A preliminary private autopsy found that Brown was shot at least six times, including twice in the head. The protests have been going on since Brown’s death heightened racial tensions between the predominantly black community and the mostly white Ferguson Police Department.

This also led to several clashes between police and protesters and prompted Missouri’s governor to put the state highway patrol in charge of security.
