U.S. President Barack Obama has lauded the destruction of chemical weapons stockpiled in Syria. He urged Damascus to fulfill its commitment to destroying its remaining production facilities.

Obama said the most lethal chemical weapons had been destroyed several weeks ahead of schedule. Tons of them were destroyed onboard the U.S. cargo vessel MV Cape Ray in international waters in the Mediterranean Sea.

Obama thanked all the countries that had provided assistance to the process, including China and Russia. Syria agreed to give up its chemical arsenal last fall, when Obama threatened missile strikes in retaliation for a chemical attack on a rebel-held suburb of Damascus. The attack is believed to have killed more than 1,000 people.
