Full coverage: Crisis in Syria

An international research organization has released a report, saying armed groups in Syria are in possession of portable anti-aircraft missiles, which could pose a serious threat to the region.

According to the findings of the Switzerland-based Small Arms Survey, these sophisticated models could be easily diverted to extremist groups operating outside Syria, and used to destroy commercial planes. It cited the destruction of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, which sent a clear signal that civilian airplanes can be exposed to the dangers at both high and low altitudes.

The report comes just hours after the US Federal Aviation Administration issued a notice barring all American flights over Syria. Syria’s conflict has killed more than 170,000 people since 2011. And the civil war has been intensified by the rise of the Islamic State militant group, which controls the border of Iraq and Syria.
