Afghan President calls for early runoff results

08-19-2014 20:20 BJT

Afghan President Hamid Karzai has called for early announcement of the result of the presidential runoff held on June 14. Karzai said in his speech at a ceremony held in Defense Ministry compound to mark the country’s 95th Independence Day.

"We are hopeful for an outcome to Afghanistan’s elections soon. The Afghan nation has been waiting to see an outcome for the agreements reached by our two Presidential candidates for the welfare of the people of Afghanistan, so Afghanistan can have a government which all the people feel a part of," Hamid Karzai said.

Tuesday marked Afghanistan’s 95th year of full independence from Britain, which began in 1919. President Karzai laid a wreath at the Independence Minatare to pay tribute to those who had sacrificed their lives for the country’s freedom. Presidential candidates Abdullah Abdullah and his opponent Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai both attended the ceremony. Results from the 14 June run-off between the two candidates are being audited in a process which US Secretary of State John Kerry brokered last month. Both sides have claimed irregularities and fraud in the vote and demanded an audit of more than 8 million votes.
