Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia on Thursday for a two-day state visit.

This is Xi’s first visit to Mongolia since assuming office two years ago. President Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan were welcomed by Mongolian Prime Minister Norovyn Altakhuyag and Foreign Minister Luvsanvandan Bold at the airport.

Xi pointed out that Mongolia is China’s great neighbor and the two nations share a deep friendship. He expressed wishes that the visit could bring more development to both countries. Xi’s visit is aimed at boosting economic ties and China is expected to sign a number of deals on energy and infrastructure cooperation.

Other issues high on the agenda include a transport deal that would allow Mongolia to use the Chinese rail network to deliver goods to other markets, as well as Mongolia’s bid to join APEC. Mongolia is seen as an important neighbor to China. They share a long land border and it is key source of natural resources. 90 percent of Mongolia’s exported goods eventually end up in China.
