Qualifying for Euro 2016 began across the continent. World champions Germany opened up their campaign against Scotland.

Die Mannschaft were looking to get back in the win column following a 4-2 demolition at the hands of Argentina last week, in a rematch of the World Cup final. And forward Thomas Mueller made sure they would not suffer another defeat.

Die Mannschaft were looking to get back in the win column following a 4-2 demolition at the hands of Argentina last week, in a rematch of the World Cup final. And forward Thomas Mueller made sure they would not suffer another defeat.

Joechim Loew was missing about half a dozen players from the squad that won the World Cup this summer.

And the hosts, get the first good chance in the eighth minute but Mueller's header is off the mark. But he would be more accurate about ten minutes later -- as his arcing header beat keeper David Marshall. 1-0 Germany! Mueller displaying his sharpness in the area.

Scotland, unbeaten in their previous six games, levelled in the 66th minute when Ikechi Anya burst clear on to a through pass, showed great composure, and placed a low shot past Manuel Neuer.

Scotland's joy was short-lived when they failed to clear the ball from a corner kick and Mueller pounced to send the ball into the top of the net from close range. 2-1 the final for the World Champs.

"In the second half, there were gaps between our forwards and defenders, and Scotland managed to create chances and score a goal. But the team reacted immediately and found the winning goal. So I am satisfied with the three points in a situation like this which is quite difficult in a way. Because we saw, particularly in the second half, that some players do not have the rhythm they would usually expect to have," Germany coach Joachim Loew said.

Balaj volley shocks A Seleccao without Ronaldo

Portugal hosted Albania in a Group I encounter. Cristiano Ronaldo was dealing with a knee problem so Nani served as the Portuguese captain. The former Man United winger wasted a chance in the 13th minute.

A Seleccao were back again in the 22nd minute, Joao Moutinho's free kick set up Vieirinha whose header went directly to the keeper.

The hosts would pay for squandering their chances. Albania scored from their only shot on target in the 52nd minute when Odise Roshi crossed from near the corner flag. Bekim Balaj, running away from the goal, met it with a first-time shot on the turn, hooking it brilliantly past a bemused Rui Patricio.

Definitely worth watching again. What a shot from Balaj!

Portugal began to look more dangerous with 20 minutes to go. Nani hits the free kick into the wall but Ricardo Horta rattles the crossbar with his shot. Pepe's final effort also went wide. 1-0 was how it would end, and Albania handed a demoralised Portugal one of their most embarrassing international defeats.
