England beats Switzerland 2-0 in Euro qualifier

In its first UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying match, England beat a Switzerland team that was 11 places higher in the FIFA rankings.

Wayne Rooney played his first competitive game for England since he was appointed the captain of the team.

Switzerland created a few chances in the first half and almost took the lead around the half-hour mark. Xherdan Shaqiri, setting up Haris Seferovic for the low shot. But Joe Hart did a good job get his leg on the shot.

Against a string of opportunities from the hosts, England threatened to grab the lead just before the break. Wayne Rooney was a constant threat up front-line. His powerful shot forced an awkward save from the Swiss keeper.

England created another chance on the ensuing the corner. Rooney picked out Phil Jones in the middle of the area. The Manchester United defender delivered a high quality header, but it was not enough to beat the keeper.

After a scoreless 45 minutes, England kept pressing hard in the second half and got the breakthrough around the hour mark.
Rooney started the counterattack and passed to Raheem Sterling, cutting forward on the left. Sterling ses up Danny Welback for a cool finish from in close to give England a 1-0 lead.

The home side had an opportunity to equalize. Josip Drmic broke through the England defense and rounded Hart only to see his effort cleared off the line by Gary Cahill. England retained the one-goal edge.

Hodgson's team settled the victory in stoppage time off another counter attack. Sterling found Rickie Lambert, and the latter set up Welback for a shot into the corner.

England beat Switzerland 2-0 and got off to a perfect start for their Euro Championship qualifying campaign.
