With all eyes on London Fashion Week, we take a detour to a new gallery show, and check out how the beautiful dresses look before they make it to the runways. A new exhibition opened in London this week, and it features a plethora of vintage fashion illustrations.

This collection of original drawings span from the post-war 1940s right through to the 1970s. There are more than 40 works on display from the likes of Rene Bouche, Rene Gruau and Carl Erickson.

"Every artist who is exhibited here in the exhibition all went to great traditional art schools, they all learned to draw from life. But because they took the turning of going into fashion illustration as opposed to other forms of art, their names were never recognized. And I feel that is very important that they now should have the recognition for their work, which is wonderful and exciting and stunning," said Connie Gray, curator.

As well as sketches, there are also magazine covers and advertising campaigns to admire.

British illustrator May Routh worked as an illustrator in the 1960s for publications including Vogue, Elle and Honey. She also covered fashion shows in Paris, before moving into costume design for films including "Jesus Christ Superstar," "The Man Who Fell to Earth" and "Ronin."

"I think they were mostly men. But when I started there were some women, because the thing is my parents had got The Daily Telegraph and I used to look, that's where I saw my first fashion drawings. It was Beryl Hartland, drew in that. So I remember her work, so I always knew she was a woman. I suppose I didn't realize that before I knew about other people. So I actually thought that I liked her work and got to meet her later on," said may Routh, illustrator.

Many of the illustrations in the exhibition come from designers, such as Barbara Hulanicki and Zandra Rhodes. The exhibition "Drawing on Style, Four Decades of Elegance" runs until September 16th.
