Voting in New Zealand’s election has now closed with polls showing the centre-right government of Prime Minister John Key well in the lead.

Key’s government looks set to win a third successive term, with the latest polls putting his National Party well out in front with about 46 percent of the vote.

The main opposition centre-left Labour Party finished a distant second with 25 percent. But New Zealand’s proportional voting system means the National Party is unlikely to gain an outright majority. And so it will need to renew its coalition deal with three minor parties to gain a majority in the 120-seat parliament.
