PLA honor guards are training for National Day celebrations. Our reporter Zhang Nini paid a visit to one camp where she talked with the first female guards, whose squad was formed this year.

The face of the Chinese military. PLA honor guards hone their moves and step in unison during a training session. The hour-long training requires soldiers to carry a flower basket weighing over one hundred kilograms up the steps, while others stand at attention without flinching.

Cheng Cheng is one of the female honor guards that were recruited earlier this year. Since their impressive debut in May, Cheng has appeared in more than 20 diplomatic ceremonies. For her, being an honor guard means more than just looking good.

"We went through the exact same training as male soldiers but in a much shorter time. At the end of the day I can’t even take my boots off, because they are all sticky and soaked in sweat. I hope our appearance reflects the strength, tenacity and courage of the Chinese military," Cheng said.

Cheng is the flag-bearer of the air force contingent. The 65-person squad represents each branch, the army, air force and navy. They are the PLA’s first female honor guards in over six decades.

Their reintroduction reflects the growing importance of female soldiers and officers, who are taking on increasing roles in combat, training and other military missions.

"The honor guards go through three kinds of training, basic, formation and specific training. Women are trained just as hard as men. The Guard of Honor is the face of Chinese diplomacy. They show our national dignity and friendship to other countries," Colonel Han Jie of PLA Guard Of Honor said.

Each step must be made precisely, down the to last centimeter. And Cheng Cheng understands the efforts behind a great march.
