Two very different cultures a continent apart, but with one common craft. Paper cutting artists from China and northern Europe come together under the roof of Beijing's Today Art Museum. Their exhibition is titled "Paper Dialogue: Dragon and Our Stories", and looks at parallels between Chinese and Scandinavian history and cultures. Here’s what happens when the Chinese and the Nordic dragons meet.

Using just a pair of scissors and pieces of paper, Chinese artist Qiao Xiaoguang and Danish-Norwegian artist Karen Bit Vejle present this stunning exhibition that plays with light and shadow.

In addition to sharing this unique form of expression, they both come from cultures where the dragon has been a prominent mythical creature through thousands of years.

And that’s the theme for their collaboration: the Chinese Long and the Scandinavian dragon, the Chinese paper-cutting tradition and the Scandinavian silhouette tradition represented by Hans Christian Andersen.

Paper-cutting serves as a bridge upon which the dragons from East and West meet.

"I hope this could be an inspiration for further dialogue and I also hope that our exhibition could set focus on what you can do with only scissors and a piece of paper," Paper cutting artist Karen Bit Vejle said.

Qiao’s eight-meter-long piece portrays a fish transforming into a dragon, while Vejle has conjured up seven dragon eggs to represent Scandinavian history, from genesis to eternity.

The light throws images on the walls and floors, inviting visitors to discover something new from a different angle.

"This exhibition shows a very big contrast between China and Scandanavia, but also you can see the lines, the networks and the similarities."

"Very impressive. I’ve brought my whole family to see this exhibition. There’s some really interesting details, and you get to see the different cutting techniques."

"Paper Dialogue: The Dragon and Our Stories" runs til October 10th.
