More and more American firms are opting to work with Chinese companies in the renewable energy field. And energy cooperation will be a key focus in this year's APEC leaders meeting.

NuGen Capital, an American company that focuses on investing in renewable energy, has just purchased solar panels from Chinese auto maker BYD. The panels are worth more than US$7 million and will be installed in several solar power stations in Massachusetts.

But punitive U.S. tariffs on imported Chinese solar products are damaging businesses.

"I think it's unnecessary. And in an industry which requires massive cooperation, we don't need in what my view is petty disputes," NuGen Capital’s CEO David Milner said.

Milner thinks governments should be left out of the pricing process for solar products and let the market decide.

"The best solution from where I see is to let the market be purely competitive," Milner said.

APEC members have realized the importance of cooperation in the renewable energy field. It is hoped that talks in forging free trade agreements between the member economies can reduce trade disputes and further remove trade barriers.
