Whether it's of news or novels, reading is going increasingly digital in this day and age. An International Conference on digital books and future technological innovation was held over the weekend in the coastal city of Shenzhen in southern China, to discuss the future direction of reading.

The conference attracted high-profile guest from 10 countries. The discussions included the integration of technology and books, the development of digital reading and copyright protection.

Dr. Hans D'Orville, Assistant Director-General for the UNESCO Bureau of Strategic Planning, commended Shenzhen's efforts in promoting reading and cited this as a reason for choose the city as the venue for the event.

"Shenzhen has been promoting the noble cause of reading for 30 years. We have been the leaders in reading in China in the past four-five years. We now want to embrace digital technology and explore how to further encourage our citizens to read," said Wu Shulin, deputy supervisor of Publishers Association of China.

Shenzhen holds a reading month every November, and has done so for the past 15 years. It is an initiative that aims to invigorate the interests of its residents in books.

The city also has regulations providing legal protection against copyright infringement. It hopes to promote a culture that takes pride and joy in reading and make it a key part of the city's identity as a place where culture and technology converge.
