Over 400 Chinese documentaries were nominated, up for sixteen awards. Zhou Hao's "Cotton" took the coveted Jury Prize, for its look inside the cotton production line and business chain. But for some categories there was no winner.

The award ceremony also featured a special screening, looking back at documentary making in China.

There was also a look to the future, with a brand new award, for Best Internet Documentary.

First to win it was Yu Weihua's "Atomic Veterans". It tells the story of people who use to work at the Malan Nuclear Base in Xinjiang.

"I'm really excited there's a special award dedicated to internet documentaries," Yu said. "It opens new possibilities for non-pros like me to create something that resonates and touches the audience."

The China Academy Awards for Documentary Films was first initiated in 2010. It's now a major event within China's documentary scene.
