China eyes bigger market share for its GPS rival

01-26-2015 04:37 BJT

GPS has dominated the global navigation market with decades-long proven reliability, accuracy and cheaper receiver cost.

The same is true in China.  User numbers are ten times higher than those using BeiDou. Though BeiDou offers more services than GPS, price is the major obstacle to its expansion. Vehicle navigation devices using BeiDou cost twice as much as GPS. And BeiDou is only one of the growing number of alternatives to GPS under development.

Russia is developing GLONASS for both civilian and military use. It's the only other navigation system in operation with global coverage and of comparable precision. The EU is also working on its own Galileo network. One of the goals is to provide a high-precision positioning system that is independent from other navigation systems.
