US to reinforce partners and alliances with NATO

02-07-2015 12:54 BJT

US President Barack Obama has released an updated national security strategy. The country's National Security Advisor, Susan Rice, discussed the strategy at the Brookings Institution think tank in Washington on Friday.

"If you read the 2010 national security strategy it had a different perspective and a different orientation towards Russia. At that stage there seemed to be still prospect of more cooperative and collaborative relationship. Now we have to deal with the reality we face and that means we will continue to reinforce our partners and alliances in NATO," she said.

The paper is meant to serve as a blueprint for Obama's final two years in office. The 29-page document forecasts no major shifts in the military campaign against Islamic State militants, or in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

In it Obama also calls for an increased focus on boosting cyber security, and combating climate change. Susan Rice also spoke on Washington's push in the Asia-Pacific region. She said the US is building a constructive relationship with China, by expanding cooperation in a wide range of fields.
