Saudi Arabia: no decision yet on ground troops

03-30-2015 10:24 BJT

Saudi Arabia's ambassador to the US says the country has made no decision yet on whether to send ground troops into Yemen, adding that the Saudi-led alliance of countries is keeping its options open.

Adel al-Jubeir said on Sunday Saudi Arabia was committed to completing its air campaign to dislodge Iranian-backed Houthis rebels, who now control much of its southern neighbour Yemen.

Asked about the possible use of ground troops, the ambassador said he didn't know whether or not there was a willingness in the region to go into Yemen, but said the coalitian haven't ruled anything out.

He stated the aim of Saudi Arabia's airstrikes is to protect civilians' safety, while supporting President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi's legitimate government.
