Full coverage: 2015 Boao Forum

Chinese President Xi Jinping said Sunday that he hopes China's annual trade with the countries involved in the belt and road project would surpass 2.5 trillion US dollars in a decade.

Xi also pledged to protect the interests of foreign companies in China. More than 50 countries have shown interest in China's "one belt one road" initiative.

Projects under the plan are mainly infrastructure plans including a railway network, highways, oil and gas pipelines, power grids, and internet networks. These projects would span across Central, West and South Asia to Greece, Russia and Oman.

By way of comparison with this 2.5 trillion USD trade projection, China's total trade volume with the European Union amounted to 466 billion US dollars in 2013.
