Gao Xiang, secretary-general of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said at the opening ceremony that the Belt and Road Initiative and the Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) provide new opportunities for Asia-Africa cooperation. Gao put forward five theoretical research proposals for social science research institutes and researchers:

First, focusing on international relations research and upholding China’s theory system in this field. Second, strengthening research into cooperation between Asia and Africa and the cultural, political, economic and other issues of countries along the belt and road route. Third, strengthening research into China’s soft power and sharing China’s experience with other developing countries to promote their development. Fourth, strengthening research into the world order to establish an equal dialogue mechanism between developed countries and their less-developed counterparts to promote mutual respect between these two sides. Fifth, strengthening research into China’s diplomacy as one of the major powers in the world arena to promote peace, development and win-win global cooperation instead of the zero-sum game of western countries.

Liu Guijin, president of the China Asia-Africa Society, the former Chinese government special representative for African affairs, stressed that the seminar was being held 60 years after the Bandung Conference and 60 years is one cycle in the traditional Chinese calendar, which meant all needed to seek a new direction and field for cooperation. During the last six decades, the world has undergone dramatic change and development. Asia and Africa are undoubtedly the two continents with the most rapid economic development. The Belt and Road Initiative comes at the right time for a “comprehensive cooperation belt” to not only promote China’s own development but also accelerate the economic take-off of Asia, Africa and Europe as a whole.

Liu also pointed out that China, as a low-profile nation, has never before been so much in the world spotlight, but with newly adopted active diplomacy including the belt and road and the AIIB, China can expect to attract growing international attention. To achieve success in all these colossal, systematic and complex tasks, China needs international understanding and support, especially the acceptance, understanding and support of people in the related countries.
