Restaurateur brings taste of India to Shanghai

India is well-known for its spices, which flavor the country's food and heritage. And one businessman is using them to bring the real Indian experience to Shanghai, in the hope of creating more interest in the country's culture.

Looking for authentic Indian food? You don't need to travel all the way to India. Rajesh Prabhakar opened his first restaurant in Shanghai in 2002 with the mission of bringing a real taste of India to China.

"Indian food is all about spices. As long as we have good spices, the outcome of the curries and the barbecues will be good, and we try to ship them from India. Most of our spices, ingredients...all of our cooking teams are very much Indian," Prabhakar said.

His effort has paid off. Since opening his restaurant 11 years ago, he has expanded to four restaurants in Shanghai's city center, and plenty of appreciative customers.

In addition to offering a cure for homesickness to Shanghai's growing Indian community, the restaurants have also attracted people hungry for a taste of Indian culture.

"Way back when we started our first restaurant in 2002, people were very curious about what Indian food is all about, because there were very very few Indian restaurants. I think the youngster of today wanted to experience the different cuisines, there is so much of eating in our culture getting into people here," Prabhakar said.

And with the arrival of Indian Prime Minister Nahendra Modi to China this week, Prabhakar is optimistic about the future of both his restaurants, and the two countries' bond.

Food is a common denominator for the world's growing population. It breaks down language and cultural barriers. It can even be a soft and pleasurable introduction to a new country. This restaurant is just one of the many in China to bring people of India and China closer...on so many levels.
