ISIL militants take full control of Iraq's Ramadi

05-18-2015 11:04 BJT

In Iraq, Islamic State militant group have taken full control of the city of Ramadi, the capital of the western Anbar province, after the Iraqi security forces withdrew from their positions.

The military units were stationed at the Eighth Brigade headquarters -- north of Ramadi -- which the militants have now taken full control of. This comes after fierce clashes between ISIL, and Iraqi security forces allied with Sunni tribal militias.

ISIL have now seized most of Anbar province, and have tried to advance towards the capital Baghdad, but several counter-attacks by security forces and Shia militias have managed to hold them up.
