Visiting US Secretary of State, John Kerry has met his South Korean counterpart Yun Byung-se in the capital Seoul.

During the talks, Kerry confirmed a firm US-South Korea alliance against any threats from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Kerry slammed the DPRK's recent testfire of a submarine-launched ballistic missile, saying it's very provocative and in violation of UN Security Council resolutions.

Kerry also touched on the frosty ties between South Korea and Japan, saying historical issues should be dealt with in a direction of harmony and healing. He also tried to ease Seoul's concerns over the revision of the US-Japan defense cooperation guideline.

The revised guideline allowes Japan to operate its self-defense forces on the Korean Peninsula to assist US troops without advance consent from South Korea.

"Constructive relations between Japan and the Republic of Korea, our most important allies in East Asia, are critical to being able to promote peace and prosperity in the region. Only three countries, our three countries, share quite as much as we share in common: democracy, a commitment to human rights, free markets. And when we work together there is a great deal that we are able to achieve," he said.
