Iraqi gov't forces thwart ISIL attack east of Ramadi

05-20-2015 18:18 BJT

Iraqi forces say they have fought off an overnight attack by Islamic State militants east of the city of Ramadi.

The insurgents attacked government lines in Husaiba al-Sharqiya, around half way between Ramadi and the Habbaniya military base. Islamic State militants are seeking to consolidate their gains in the vast desert province of Anbar, where only small pockets of territory remain under government control.

Iraq's government has been rallying Iranian-allied Shiite militiamen to join the offensive against ISIL in Ramadi, looking for swift action to recapture the city.

"The liberation (of Ramadi) will not take long. It is a matter of a few days in which ideas, plans are put (into place). Preparations have reached the final stages in all aspects. After this, we will carry out the liberation operation, especially as there is a very positive and effective factor, which is the participation of the coalition forces with airstrikes around the clock, and this has shaken the terrorist groups," said Brigadier General Saad Maan, Spokesman of Iraq's joint operations command.
