05-22-2015 17:35 BJT

The US Defense Department has announced it is sending 2 thousand anti-tank weapons to Iraq, to help forces in the country in their fight against ISIL.

A spokesman said the weapons could arrive as early as next week, adding that the US is also expediting the delivery of ammunition and other equipment, in order to counter the threat of vehicle bombs. According to the spokesman, the Iraqi government will distribute the weapons among the country's armed forces, as well as Kurdish and Sunni fighters.

On Sunday, the Iraqi city of Ramadi fell to ISIL, marking a significant setback for the Iraqi security forces.
