Heavy border fighting between Houthis, Saudis

05-24-2015 16:19 BJT

Saudi forces and members of Yemen's Houthi militia trade heavy artillery fire destroying the main border crossing between the two countries.

The Haradh checkpoint, the largest for passengers and goods between Saudi Arabia and Yemen, was evacuated amid shelling which razed its departure lounge and passport section. Residents of several Yemeni villages in the area left their homes and fled.

For two months Saudi Arabia and its Arab coalition have been bombing Yemen targeting the Houthi fighters. The Sunni Muslim states believe the Shi'ite Houthis are a proxy for influence by their arch rival Iran, but their campaign has yet to reverse the rebels' battlefield gains. And the intense border fighting marks an escalation of the conflict.

Elsewhere in Yemen, heavy fighting between Houthi forces and fighters loyal to exiled president President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi was reported in the central city of Taiz. The Houthis also reportedly seized control of a military base on a strategic mountaintop.
