Full coverage: 8.1-Magnitude Quake Hits Central Nepal

A road-repair and rescue team from the Chinese People’s Armed Police returns to its base after accomplishing its mission on the China-Nepal border.

The earthquake destroyed sections of two main roads connecting the two countries, including the bridge near the Gyirong port in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region. The bridge, known as China-Nepal friendship bridge, was damaged by large rocks that fell from the mountains after the earthquakes.

A 500-member road-repairing team using 180 engineering machines restored damaged and blocked portions of the 114-kilometer road link from Tibet to Kathmandu. Police officers braved falling rocks to remove 550,000 cubic meters of debris, repair 148 kilometers of damaged roads and reinforce three bridges. They also sent 12.5 tons of food and 300 boxes of fast-food to the Nepalese.

"We had about 500 Chinese police officers with 180 sets of heavy machinery in Nepal. Our team repaired 31 kilometers of severely damaged parts within five days. The China-Nepal highway through the Zham border crossing re-opened to traffic on May 8th," Commander of Chinese repair team Fu Ling said.
