At the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, President Xi Jinping is attending the 7th BRICS Leaders Summit (July 8-9) and will attend the 15th session of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) leaders board meeting (July 9-10 ) in Ufa, Russia.

SCO and BRICS countries account for one-third of the world’s territory and more than 3 billion people or one fifth of the world’s population while their total GDP totals one-fifth of the global economy. The coincidence of the Ufa Summit and the BRICS meeting did not happen by accident, but unites the two essential engines in promoting world peace and development together.

During BRICS and SCO meetings in Ufa, President Xi will meet other leaders from SCO countries and observer countries. He will talk to guests invited by Russia and heads of other relevant international organizations. They will exchange in-depth views on the development of SCO and BRICS, the regional situation and major international and regional issues based on the principle of coordinating positions and building consensus. President Xi will announce China’s suggestion for promoting development of the SCO and express China’s desire to build the Silk Road economic belt with SCO assistance. China aims to actuate SCO security and economic development, promote comprehensively the development of BRICS and the SCO with efforts from all countries and further strengthen pragmatic cooperation between group states in various fields.

The world is watching closely the two events. Then, what will be the impacts of the meetings?

Firstly, SCO vitality will be enhanced. This summit will clarify and strengthen SCO’s long-term development direction. At the summit, state leaders will approve the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Development Strategy until 2025. This document covers a wide range and draws a future map for SCO development with great significance placed on the political program. This will inspire new SCO development in economics, security and other fields.

Secondly, SCO cohesion will be strengthened. At the summit, some broader cooperative agreements will be signed or ratified including a statement on the fight against drugs and a new cooperative program for fighting the three evil forces. Some new measures will be taken to strengthen cooperation in interconnectivity, trade, investment, production capacity and finance.

Multilateral diplomatic activities during the summit will deepen mutual political trust among SCO member states. It is expected various exchanges among states in many fields will be the highlight of the summit. SCO cohesion will also reach new heights on the basis of cooperative agreements.

Thirdly, SCO influence will be ,boosted. It has been 14 years since the establishment of SCO. Nowadays with the increase in inter-country communication, interdependence and regional integration, SCO member states have constructed a multilevel, wide-ranging, comprehensive cooperation framework on the basis of full respect for mutual sovereignty and equity, and a positive role in promoting world harmony.

India and Pakistan will officially join SCO at the summit. They were observer states in the past, meaning this moment will mark substantial SCO expansion and reflect SCO’s enhanced influence.

Through the aforementioned measures, China will play its due role and stimulate growth potential not only for China but for other countries and even the world. It is certain China will contribute new improvements for world peace and stability to secure a future full of promise.
