The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation has wrapped up its summit with a 10-year development blueprint in the Russian city of Ufa. The strategy maps out goals for the SCO member states to conduct cooperation in areas including security, trade and people-to-people exchanges in the next decade. In a speech at the summit, Chinese President Xi Jinping called on the member states to aim for greater progress at this new beginning for the organization.

Boosting the SCO's development. Xi Jinping called on SCO member states to take the "Shanghai Spirit" as a guide to build a community of common destiny.

"We should continue to observe the Shanghai spirit and other principles governing international relations championed by the SCO. These are to safeguard international fairness and justice, to advocate multilateralism and the ideal of opening up, to respect each other's interests, oppose interference in other countries' internal affairs, solve disputes through peaceful means, and boost common win-win development," said Xi.

Speaking on regional security, Xi Jinping called for the SCO to take a bigger role in Afghanistan's national reconciliation and economic recovery. Xi Jinping also said member states should boost cooperation in combating terrorism, drugs trafficking and strengthening border defense.

Investment cooperation was also a key part of the President's speech. In the next few years, China will push for the completion of 4,000 kilometers of railway and over 10,000 kilometers of highway within the region. Xi Jinping also called for the rapid establishment of an SCO development bank.

On people-to-people exchanges, President Xi said China will launch separate youth exchange programs in 2016 and 2018, which will see thousands of students from the other member states coming to study in China. The Chinese President also addressed the bloc's new-approved members, India and Pakistan. President Xi said China believes the two countries will inject new impetus into the organization's all-ranging cooperation.
