The Belt and Road Initiatives were put forward by Chinese President Xi Jinping during his overseas visits in 2013, which includes the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road.
The initiative has been seen as Beijing’s plan to revive the ancient “Silk Road,” which linked Europe to China as a major trade route more than a thousand years ago, boosting the economies and cultural interactions of all the peoples along the way.
The One Belt One Road Initiative has grabbed the optimistic attention of the world. It is an important strategy put forward by China to proactively cope with the profound changes of the current international situation and to comprehensively coordinate domestic and global circumstances. One Belt One Road possesses rich Chinese cultural connotations and activates the essence of harmonious Chinese culture in the new historical circumstance. The bright future of the One Belt One Road strategy is closely related to its historical origin and cultural charm.
Firstly, One Belt One Road pursues peace. Peace is the common aspiration of all peoples across the world. The Silk Road Economic Belt and 21st Century Maritime Silk Road involve more than 50 countries, 4.4 billion people and 21 trillion yuan in aggregated regional economic largesse. They are mostly developing countries of different histories, conditions and levels of development. Their infrastructures are poor and communication between these countries is not so smooth. But they have strong late-mover advantages and big promotion space.
For these countries, the biggest appeal is to win development opportunities in a peaceful international environment. The One Belt One Road Initiative is conducive to enhancing international relations and to maintain geopolitical stability. Undoubtedly it provides favorable conditions for these countries to enjoy economic prosperity and their peoples to lead happy lives.
Secondly, One Belt One Road means cooperation. No country can develop without cooperation. Of all the countries involved in One Belt One Road, some have excess capital, others excess resources. Some have sufficient labor, others huge market potential. In short, they have complementary advantages and it is urgent for them to build a diverse platform for cooperation.
In recent years some countries have strengthened cooperation through the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), China-ASEAN (10+1) and BRICS platforms. These bilateral, regional and multilateral cooperation mechanisms between China and One Belt One Road countries have been continuously improved. China took the lead in boosting infrastructure construction by establishing the Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank and Silk Road Fund which provide genuine help for developing countries involved in this strategy. Meanwhile, the buildup of other financial platforms such as the BRICS New Development Bank and SCO Development Bank have been steadily pushed forward and guarantee implementation of the One Belt One Road strategy.
Thirdly, the One Belt One Road strategy advocates win-win cooperation. Win-win cooperation has become a trend in global development. One Belt One Road not only links up the East Asia economic region with its strong development momentum, but also connects it to the developed Europe-North America economic powerhouse.
One Belt One Road advocates communication of policy, connection of facilities, smooth trade, accommodation of funds, the common aspiration of people and adheres to principles of joint discussion, construction and sharing. The One Belt One Road strategy is open and inclusive. Along with the gradual implementation of the strategy, One Belt One Road will open channels along the New Silk Road and promote common development of regional economic entities. It will facilitate the building of a new maritime order. One Belt One Road will exert influence on the global geopolitical structure and the establishment of a new future world order based on win-win cooperation.
In Chinese civilization’s several millennia of history, there has been long-term peace and prosperity but also destruction and war. The Chinese people have a deep grasp of peace and win-win cooperation. Through the guidance of these concepts full of historical wisdom and traditional Chinese culture, One Belt One Road will certainly inject powerful positive energy into world peace, stability, development and prosperity.
