The Chinese have been looking forward to the spirit of the modern Olympic Games with full respect and expectations. In 1908, an article of the Tianjin Youth magazine asked: When will China send an athlete to participate in the Olympic Games? When will China send a team to participate in the Olympic Games? When will China hold the Olympic Games? 100 years later, the Chinese Olympic dreams have come true.

The successful hosting of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games and Nanjing Youth Olympic Games have impressed the world and enhanced China’s passion for Olympic sports. It offers a foundation to host the upcoming Olympic Winter Games in China.

Beijing offers well-equipped Olympic facilities. All ice events for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics would be held in Beijing. Of the planned 12 competition and non-competition venues, 11 have been operated in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

In the winter, participants can travel to and from the Olympic districts of Beijing, Yanqing, and Zhangjiakou, Hebei Province. The distances between the Olympic Village and venues will be about 15 minutes, 10 minutes, and 5 minutes respectively. The largest Olympic Main Media Center is located in Beijing, which will provide good services for the global press.

Secondly, there’s a splendid Olympic slogan. The central idea of Beijing’s bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics is “athlete-centered, sustainable development, thrifty principle”, which follows the “Olympic Agenda 2020”. The budget for the 2022 Winter Olympics is in line with the principles of scientificity, thoroughness, prudence and feasibility.

Local officials will control operating and construction costs, while focusing on the positive interactions between the Olympic Movement and urban development. Beijing will provide top services for athletes in training, competitions, transportation, accommodations, food, medical care, cultural exchanges, as well as accessible facilities and services in line with the International Paralympic Committee standards for the Winter Paralympic athletes.

China has enthusiastic Olympic fans. The polls directed by the IOC and Beijing 2022 Bid Committee have shown that support rates for Beijing's bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics stands at more than 90%. President Xi Jinping of China is a big sports fan for the Olympics.

Provided that Beijing gets the opportunity to host the Olympic Winter Games, residents in Beijing and Zhangjiakou would benefit. The Winter Olympics will promote the development of Beijing and Zhangjiakou as joint bidding cities. The high-speed railway linking Beijing and Zhangjiakou will be completed in 2019. By then, the trip  from Beijing to Zhangjiakou will take about 50 minutes.

Regional air pollution controls have been accelerated. In an effort to tackle air pollution, Beijing upgraded its coal-fired heating system in urban areas to natural gas heating system and closed down heavy-polluted plants. Neighboring city Tianjin and provinces including Hebei adopted similar measures to give Beijing a hand.

The Olympic Winter Games will promote sports culture, tourism and recreation and encourage industrial restructuring and increase employment as well. People will enjoy more convenient transportation, frequent blue skies and better living standards.

It is believed that the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing would spread the Olympic spirit and boost the popularity of winter sports. According to industry analysis, Beijing’s bid for the Winter Olympics would inspire 300 million people to participate in winter athletics; while supporting the principles of solidarity, friendship and peace among the nation’s population.

The two candidate cities to host the 2022 Winter Olympic Games – Beijing and Almaty, Kazakhstan – have now entered the home stretch in the selection process. The 128th session of the International Olympic Committee will announce the winning bid on Friday in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia.
We hope the IOC will select Beijing, the capital of China. If it wins, Beijing would be the first city to host both a summer and winter games. The city is ready to welcome all snow sports enthusiasts from around the world, and so let’s bless Beijing!
