Beijing and Zhangjiakou have won the bid to co-host the games. Our reporter Ning Hong tells us how this piece of news is received by the people in Zhangjiakou.

In front of the great wall in Zhangjiakou. people are gathering here to celebrate the victory, after the city and the capital Beijing were both announced the co-hosts for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

This is undoubtedly a very important moment in the history of Zhangjiakou city, for the first time its name will be remembered forever as an Olympics city. It is an honor to be part of such a great event, and people are excited about the changes that will soon come following the win.”

1 "Winning the bid is the hope of our generation."

2 "We are very excited, this is the result we expected! The Winter Olympics now belongs to us, to Zhangjiakou, and to Beijing!"

As a co-host city, Zhangjiakou has many unique advantages. It has the best air quality in North China, and the best ski trails in the country. Its snowy season lasts 150 days a year. It is one of the most ideal places to play host to the Winter Games.

"The International Olympic Committee emphasizes a lot on the post-games facilities usage. They want the legacy of Olympics to be put in good use even after the games. It might be inconvenience to spread the sporting event in three different venues, but this would benefit the developments of these places post-games. Connecting these three places with fast transportation such as a high-speed railway, means we have met the requirements of the Olympic Games,” Zhang Chunsheng, vice directoR of Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics Games Bid Committee, said.

More projects are in the pipeline. These include a high-speed railway connecting Beijing and Zhangjiakou, expected for completion by 2017. More ski resorts and ski trails will also be added in Chongli, a famous winter resort in China. All these plans are not just for the Olympics, they are sustainable developments for locals and tourism over the long term.
