On July 31, 2015, the 128th plenary session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. After hearing presentations from two candidate cities: Almaty and Beijing, the IOC President Thomas Bach announced that Beijing will host the 2022 Winter Olympics Games.

This is the second time for Beijing to host the Olympic Games (2008 Summer Games). The Chinese capital becomes the first city ever to host both the Summer and Winter Olympics. The countries hosting both the Winter and Summer Olympic Games include: France, the United States, Germany, Italy, Japan, Canada and Russia.

It's a significant moment considering that the IOC had restored legal status of China into the international Olympic family in 1979. In 1980 China sent 28 athletes to participate in the 13th Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, New York U.S.A.

Since returning to the Winter Olympics' fold, China had won 201 gold, 145 silver, and 127 bronze medals; including 473 in total in the Summer Olympic Games ranking in the top 5 of the Summer Olympic medals table. At the Sochi Winter Olympic Games in 2014, China had taken 9 gold, 18 silver, and 17 copper medals with 44 in total ranking No.17 in the Winter Olympic medals table. In the combined medal table of the Summer and Winter Olympic Games, China ranks No. 7.

The Winter Olympic Games has become an important indicator to measure a country's power rankings in athletic sports. The Winter Olympics will likely inspire more people to participate in winter athletics and improve their health. China will witness the advent of a new phase in the development of the Olympic winter sports and in the promotion of the Olympic spirit. On February 11, 2014, Chinese President Xi Jinping visited the Chinese sports delegation participating in the 22nd Sochi Winter Olympics in Russia. Talking about Beijing and Zhangjiakou's bid for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, he said winter sports are not popular in China, but hosting the Winter Olympic Games can light the "torchlight" of inspiration for the Chinese to engage in snow sports.

Chinese winter sports are in its preliminary stage of popularity, mainly developing in China's northeast provinces. The Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic Games has stimulated the public’s sports awareness and enthusiasm for athletics overall.

The 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China pledged to build a prosperous society in 2020. The 2022 Winter Olympics provides another opportunity for China to demonstrate its national image, and to promote economic and social development.

Like the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games, the 2022 Winter Olympics is also a pivotal platform to showcase China's achievements in its development and reflect its international influence.

Beijing's successful bidding for the Winter Olympics means that the Chinese nation holds full confidence to stand alongside other powerful countries of the world. It marks how China’s international status has improved with greater political stability, prosperity, social progress, ethnic solidarity than ever before. It is the world's affirmation of China and the Chinese dream.

Winter sports can be characterized by tourism, snow and ice industries. Hosting the Winter Olympic Games would not only play a direct role in the thriving sports industry, but can boost the building of a leisure society.

Beijing will hold ice sports events for the Games, while Zhangjiakou in neighboring Hebei Province will hold snow sports events. The Games will encourage the development of modern infrastructure and tourism in the suburban Yanqing district of Beijing, and Zhangjiakou. Next few years will witness more coordinative development in the regions of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei, which have jump started a new urbanization project.

Beijing will support the growing emphasis on eco-consciousness and ecological civilization to implement stronger air pollution controls in the region of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei.

As Chinese vice premier Liu Yandong said in Kuala Lumpur at a ceremony after the bidding announcement, China will fulfill all the commitments and work hard to prepare for an athlete's centered, sustainable and economical Games in 2022 in seven years to come.
We are confident that China will present a fantastic, extraordinary and excellent Winter Olympics.
