On September 3, 2015, China held a grand parade to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of victory Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggresion and  the World Anti-Fascist War, which took place at the Tian’anmen Square, downtown Beijing.

Active Duty Generals Serve as Leaders of the Square Teams

More than 50 active duty generals served as leaders of square teams. General Zhang Haiqing was the leader of "'Five Heroes on Langya Mountain' heroes and models" square team. He is a major-general of the 65th group army and the only commander to participate.

Generals' serving as leaders of square teams creates a good image for our senior commanders as they train soldiers, setting a good example for the army.

All New Equipment - Homemade

The land, sea and air forces and the second artillery corps all have new equipment, while other new equipment is getting manufactured. All weapons and equipment in the Parade are homemade, which showcase new achievements of independent innovations and information construction.

New Equipment Make Their Debut

Qu Rui, Deputy Director of the Parade Leading Group Office and Deputy Director  of General Staff Operation Department, said the parade had gathered 84 percent of its new weapons and equipment that reflect the strong development of Chinese military modernization.

Aircraft in Parade - New Historical Record

Compared with previous military parades, this year's event has a larger air echelon with some 200 planes, creating a new record.

The aircraft include all types of active service, land, sea and the air forces that are advanced China-made productions.

Generals Serve as Captains for Aircraft

In the 2009 National Day Parade, 6 Division Commanders piloted planes flying over Tiananmen Square, which had become a legend. In this year's parade, the Army generals followed the tradition again. Some served as air commanders piloting airplanes. Many Division Commanders and more than ten Regimental Commanders led the flight teams in person.

Air Fleet is Heart-shaking

This is the first great Memorial Day Parade in China except for the National Day Parade. Accordingly, much effort has been taken in  the layout and formation of the air echelon. Elements of Resisting War and characteristics of the times had demonstrated innovative and grand sights.

The Air Flag Square Team first appeared in the air, the planes were composed of a formation of 70 to highlight the 70th Anniversary theme to express the determination of the army to struggle for the dreams of a powerful nation and strong military force.

Female Soldiers Create Beautiful Landscape

The military honor guard square team is the first of 11 peripatetic squares to enter the field. Female honor guards for the first time appear in the grand parade. A female associate conductor and band women participated in the joint military band for the first time. Additionally, female pilots flew over Tiananmen Square as well.

51 female honor guards marched through Tiananmen Square. Their average height stood at 1.78 meters. Cheng Cheng, the female honor guards squadron leader, holding the rank of Lieutenant, is one of the first Chinese female honor guards. She has been in the army for over 11 years, and has been awarded a merit citation. The Chinese Women’s Association awarded her the honorary title of "Women Pace-Setter".

"Training women soldiers to perform at the same standards as male soldiers" is Cheng's top priority. During parade training, peripatetic squares are required to keep standing straight without moving for 2 hours, performing goose-steps for 200 meters, and all members march quickly for 1000 meters without a transmutation of movement.

2400-Member Choir Make Their Debut

Qu Rui said, "in order to heighten the atmosphere of commemoration, the joint military band and the choir of the Liberation Army has undertaken the music and singing tasks. The band is mainly formed by the PLA military band."

Others have been drawn from seven Military Academies. They play and sing nearly 30 classical war-time songs such as Anti-Japanese Military and Political University School Anthem, Defend the Yellow River, Over the Taihang Mountain, and The People's Army Loyal to the Party, and other songs that reflect the war and the times.

Choir members are all participating in a military parade for the first time.

Veteran Teams Participate in the Parade

Veterans were invited, QU Rui said there were two veteran square teams, selected from the Chinese mainland.

They were surviving war veterans of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Kuomintang (KMT), the hero martyrs' descendants, and models supporting the war, all together more than 300 of them. The war veterans have an average age of 90 years, the oldest veteran is 102; the average age of the supporting models is 88, and average 78 of the hero martyrs' descendants.

They were invited to reflect the Chinese people's respect, the admiration to the hero martyrs, and pay tribute to the supporting models, which embody the whole nation’s resistance against Japanese aggressors  under the leadership of the CPC.

Qiao Liang, professor of the National Defense University believes that inviting KMT veterans of the War highlights our historical tolerance and broad minds. "We hope the Parade can tell people that whoever spares all efforts to national interests is a hero; those who stand up at a time of national peril deserve our respect."

Russia and other Foreign Military Teams Make Their Debuts
Representatives from foreign armies were invited to the parade for the first time ever. Qu Rui said, "Russia and other 10 countries send square teams to participate: Afghanistan, Cambodia, Fiji, Laos, Vanuatu and Venezuela sent delegates to participate. A total of 31 countries sent troops to emulate."

Participation of foreign military teams and teams from Asia, Europe, Africa, Oceania and the Americas reflect the common attitude to commemorate victory and the pursuit of lasting peace in the world. Qiao Liang said that inviting veterans of the Soviet Union had shown our most solemn salute to those who had ever helped our country win the war.

"At that time, the peace-loving and justice-supporting nations marched hand in hand, and we fought together against the fascists and at last achieved victory."
