This year marks the 25th anniversary of the establishment of China-Singapore ties and the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Singapore. Chinese President Xi Jinping is paying a state visit to enhance bilateral relations.

China-Singapore ties feature a high starting point, extensive cooperation and huge potential that has been headed in the right direction for the over 25 years.

China has become Singapore's  largest trade partner. Bilateral trade volume reached 80 billion US dollars last year. As the only ASEAN country signing a free trade  agreement with Beijing, Singapore is one of the  economies  having deep financial cooperation with China.

Meanwhile, over 10,000 Chinese students are studying in Singapore, while several thousands of  Singaporean students study in China.

Several generations of leaders of both countries have valued bilateral relations. High-level exchanges have been frequent. Chinese leaders from Deng Xiaoping to Xi Jinping were invited to visit Singapore.

Former Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew had visited China more than thirty times. The annual negotiations mechanism of the vice premier level has played an important role. Some ministers and high-grade civil servants of both countries have become good friends.

Beijing has attached great importance to the development model, governance experience and successful business operation channels of Singapore. The City-State has a small domestic market and lacks natural resources. China is a big market for development potential. Building a community of interests has created cooperation momentum.

Over the years, both sides have sent numerous officials for visits. The two countries have signed a series of cooperation agreements in the fields of  economy, finance, science and technology, culture and education.

Cooperation projects, such as the Suzhou Industrial Park and Tianjin Eco-friendly City, have received strong government support. Entrepreneurs have confidence to participate in it. This cooperation model conforms with the national conditions of the two countries.

Under new circumstances, Xi's visit is an opportunity for both sides to project the future based on their experiences. It's time for the China-Singapore free trade agreement to be upgraded for greater potential.

Singapore can start investing in the central and western parts of China and participate in the "Belt and Road" Initiative. Singapore can play more active roles in regional affairs and promoting China's cooperation with ASEAN.
