While in Paris, President Xi Jinping urged world leaders at the UN climate conference to work together to reduce emissions and achieve sustainable development post 2020.

Xi also held key meetings with his Russian, Brazilian and US counterparts on the sidelines of the conference. Besides climate change, the Chinese president discussed issues including the fight against terrorism, financial cooperation and major-power relations.

A shared mission. One that must be solved. Xi Jinping used his speech at the opening ceremony of the COP21 meeting to urge countries to overcome their differences. The resolve of many leaders is obvious when it comes to fighting climate change.

But differences soon come to light when they get down to business. Xi urged more cooperation, pointing out that climate change is an issue without borders.

"The agreement should help galvanize global efforts and encourage broad participation, and provide institutional arrangements that propel countries to make concerted efforts," Xi said.

Xi did however say it is crucial that the Paris talks address economic differences between nations, and allow different countries to develop their own solutions.

"The Paris conference agreement should accommodate national conditions of various countries and emphasize practical results. It is imperative to respect differences among countries, especially developing countries, in domestic policies, capacity building, and economic structure. Addressing climate change should not deny the legitimate needs of developing countries to reduce poverty and to improve people's living standards," Xi said.

In his meeting with US President Barack Obama, Xi said the two countries need to firmly commit to the right direction of building a new model of major-country relations.

The two leaders promised to work together to ensure the Paris conference achieves ambitious and successful results.

In meeting his Brazilian counterpart Dilma Rousseff. President Xi said that as developing countries, China and Brazil enjoy extensive common interests in climate talks.

The two leaders said they hoped to work closely together to help yield a comprehensive, balanced and legally binding outcome at the conference.

Xi and Rousseff also agreed to make full use of the BRICS New Development Bank in promoting financial cooperation.

They said they hope to utilize a package of financing arrangements between China and Latin America to promote China-Brazil trade and investment.

In the meeting between Xi and Russian President Vladimir Putin, the two leaders agreed to enhance cooperation in the fight against terrorism.

Xi said China stands ready to work with the international community, including Russia, to help make the world a safer place.
