It is well known that Peng Liyuan, wife of Chinese President Xi Jinping, has campaigned against AIDS for many years. In 2006 Peng served as propagandist for China's AIDS prevention and in 2011 she took up the post of the World Health Organization Goodwill Ambassador for Tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS.

Peng has personally involved herself in every detail of fighting AIDS including visiting children suffering AIDS, appealing for psychiatric care at the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (China’s top advisory body), shooting public service messages and attending international meetings on AIDS.

Peng attended an anti-AIDS advocacy activity  in Johannesburg on December 5: Caring for an HIV-free Generation. She was joined by first ladies from 10 African countries, UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibe and WHO Director-General Margaret Chan.

Africa is a severely afflicted area. Africa has 10 percent of the world’s population but more than 70 percent of the world's AIDS patients and carriers. Currently AIDS is the No.1 killer of African people. Its rapid spread decreased the number of African laborers and shortened their life expectancy. It is a priority task for Africa to fight AIDS.
China has consistently supported African countries in the fight against AIDS, supporting the UN Program on HIV and AIDS and WHO AIDS prevention and control in Africa as well as supporting Africa's infrastructure for medical institutions, women's and children's healthcare.

In an anti-AIDS advocacy activity, Peng and the first ladies from African countries jointly promoted the fight against AIDS, committed to the prevention and control of AIDS and the realization of a three-zero vision: zero new infections, zero discrimination and zero deaths.

Peng made it clear at the activity that AIDS prevention and control means caring and treating more AIDS patients, making full use of all media platforms, widely and deeply carrying out health promotion and education, educating kids with self-protection awareness and raising the level of public health on the basis of economic development.
Meanwhile at the summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation President Xi Jinping declared “Ten Plans of China-Africa Cooperation” for the next three years, one of which is to help African countries improve their medical and health condition.

According to the medical and health cooperation plan at the summit, China will be involved in a public health prevention and control system and capacity construction like the Center for Disease Control in Africa, supporting model cooperation in 20 hospitals in both China and Africa by continuously dispatching medical teams and giving medical aid such as the March towards Brightness projects for curing eye diseases, as well as maternal and pediatric healthcare.
