Year-ender: Chinese FM on international situation and China's diplomacy in 2015②

[Editor's note] As 2015 is drawing to an end and 2016 is on the way, how do observers and researchers in foreign affairs and international politics fields, as well as ordinary readers consider the changes in the world situation and international pattern? How do they see China's diplomacy and the role of China in the world today? The answer might be as the old Chinese saying goes: The benevolent see benevolence and the wise see wisdom.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi delivered a speech entitled "The Year of Comprehensively Promoting the Major-Country Diplomacy with Chinese Characteristics" at the 2015 Forum on the International Situation and China’s Diplomacy held during the weekend in Beijing.

Based on his speech, CNTV compiled a series under three topics to share with our readers to help politicians, think tanks, other readers to better understand China and its foreign policy that promote China to work jointly with other countries to add positive energy to a changing world in 2016. This is the second part.

China has deepened major countries’ relations in 2015.


North America

Xi-Obama meetings were held at the Annenberg Retreat in California in 2013 - and at the Zhongnanhai leadership compound in Beijing last year.

Chinese President Xi Jinping paid his first state visit to the United States last September to reaffirm major country relations; synchronize development and strategies; grasp common interests; undertake global responsibilities, sign 50 agreements and achievements; and depict new visions for strategic cooperation of all fields.

Americans from the west coast to the east coast, innovation centers to political centers, regular folks to social elites have endorsed the Sino-US friendship from generation to generation.

President Xi and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin had celebrated the 70th anniversary of victory of World War II together by attending ceremonies held in Moscow and Beijing to enhance political mutual trust and support a Sino-Russian strategic collaborative partnership.

The two sides agreed to engage in large cooperation projects in energy, aviation, spaceflight and much more. The Moscow-Kazan high-speed railway cooperation agreement was signed to jumpstart Russia’s Far East endeavors.

Xi visited Kazakhstan and Republic of Belarus. Chinese Premier Li Keqiang hosted the prime ministers' meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). Beijing has engaged in high-level exchanges with Eurasian countries.


Xi paid a state visit to Great Britain (GB), establishing a comprehensive strategic partnership, opening a golden era for relations to set a benchmark for cooperation between emerging and traditional major nations.

Li visited France and the European Union (EU) and held the first China-European leaders' meeting after recent leadership elections for the EU. China and Germany initiated high-level economic dialogue, and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will soon attend the first diplomacy and security strategy dialogue in Germany.

The "16+1" cooperation between China and Central and Eastern European nations had developed quickly. The first leaders' meeting was held in China to confirm a partnership featuring openness, inclusiveness, and win-win results. Beijing has maintained high-level exchanges with 21 European countries.


Xi attended the Asia-Africa summits  and commemorative activities marking the 60th anniversary of the Bandung Conference.

Li visited South Korea and restarted the suspended China, Japan and South Korea leaders' meetings. Beijing hosted a visit for Indian Prime Minister Modi to enhance cooperation between two developing countries. After Nepal suffered an earthquake, Chinese people offered aid immediately.

The Lancang-Mekong Foreign Ministers' meeting was held for the first time, initiating the new type subzone cooperation. Beijing had forged free trade agreements between China, South Korea, and Australia. Negotiations on the China-ASEAN free trade agreement were completed.

Negotiations on a China-New Zealand free trade agreement were pushed forward. RCEP (Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership) negotiations have made tremendous progress and expected to be completed in 2016.

Africa and Latin America

The Forum on China-Africa Cooperation was first held in Africa. Xi had gathered with 50 African leaders and Chairman of African Union, to outline cooperation in many areas. Beijing proposed the "10 major plans" to strengthen self-directed development of Africa.

Beijing is lifting China-Africa friendly relations to a new historic level. The first ministerial meeting between China and Latin America was held in China, reaching a consensus on a comprehensive cooperative partnership.

Li visited four Latin American countries, synchronizing development strategies and promoting productivity cooperation. In 2015, Chinese diplomacy started with Latin America cooperation and ended with Africa.
