Personal Description

Mark Niu is the San Francisco correspondent for CCTV-America. He frequently reports on the growing business ties between China and California, while also highlighting the successes and struggles of the Asian-American community.

Mark extensively covers Silicon Valley’s hi-tech and startup scene, while also exploring the industry’s economic and social impact on local residents. Mark has most recently conducted interviews with San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and Dreamworks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg.

Mark spent twelve years working overseas in Hong Kong and China. He served as anchor and correspondent for Fox’s international sister network, Star TV, where he traveled throughout the Asia region. He provided in depth reporting on Hong Kong’s transition to Chinese rule, traveled by bus through the DMZ to North Korea, and interviewed Asian leaders including Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou and former Philippine President Gloria Arroyo.

He was awarded a Foreign Correspondents Human Rights Press Award from Amnesty International for his investigative report on corporal punishment in Indian schools. As a journalist in Asia, Mark helped produce programs for CBS 60 Minutes, The NBC Nightly News, The National Geographic Channel and the Nightly Business Report on PBS. He was a familiar face in Hong Kong where he anchored and reported the English news for the territory’s two largest broadcasters, TVB and Asia Television.

Prior to that, Mark served as reporter and producer at local NBC and ABC affiliates in Wisconsin.

Mark is also a screenwriter and playwright. His play, Juche Rules, based on his travels to North Korea, was staged at East West Players Theater in Los Angeles and published in the Southern California Review. His short films have earned Best Drama Awards at both the Moondance and Poppy Jasper Film Festivals.
